Killahara Castle

Killahara Castle is a 16th-century tower house located near Thurles in County Tipperary, Ireland.

It was built around 1550 for Donagh O'Fogartie, chief of the O'Fogartie clan, a powerful family that controlled large areas of North Tipperary at the time. After O'Fogartie's death, the castle passed to the Purcell family through marriage. During the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland in the mid-17th century, the castle was attacked, its owners were dispossessed, and the building was left damaged.

It later became part of the Trant estate and underwent several restoration attempts over the following centuries. The castle is known for its well-preserved tower-house design, featuring thick stone walls, spiral staircases, defensive chambers, and battlements. After a major restoration completed in 2008, Killahara Castle became one of the finest restored medieval tower houses in Ireland, offering a vivid glimpse into the country's Gaelic and Norman heritage.
