Kirkjufell
Grundarfjörður, Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Iceland
Kirkjufell is a striking 463‑meter mountain on the north coast of Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula, rising just west of the small fishing town of Grundarfjörður and often called “Church Mountain” because of its distinct, church‑spire‑like shape. It is one of Iceland’s most photographed peaks and has become an iconic symbol of the Snæfellsnes region, often framed together with the nearby waterfall Kirkjufellsfoss for classic landscape shots. The mountain is not a volcano but a nunatak, a rocky peak that stood above the glaciers during the Ice Age, made of layered lava and sandstone with tuff at the summit, and it offers accessible hiking routes in summer as well as dramatic views over the sea, surrounding hills, and birdlife along the coast.
