Kiso-Fukushima Castle Site
Kiso, Japan
Kiso-Fukushima Castle was a strategic mountaintop fortress located in Kiso, Nagano Prefecture, built by the Kiso clan in the early 15th century to control the important Kiso Valley route. Famous for enduring the 1554 Siege of Kiso-Fukushima by the warlord Takeda Shingen, the castle later lost its importance after the battle of Sekigahara, though it continued as an administrative center for the valley under the Tokugawa shogunate.
Now, while only earthworks, moats, and some clay walls remain, the castle site sits above the historic post town of Fukushima-juku, offering visitors a sense of the region’s samurai history and impressive panoramic views of the Kiso Valley.
