Verified Koknese Castle Ruins

Koknese, Latvia, Latvia

Koknese Castle Ruins are the remains of a medieval stone castle in the town of Koknese, located at the meeting point of the Daugava and Pērse rivers.

The castle was built in 1209 on the orders of Bishop Albert of Riga, replacing an earlier wooden hillfort, and became an important defensive, administrative, and trading center along the Daugava River. Over the centuries, the castle was contested by Polish, Swedish, and Russian forces and changed hands many times during regional wars.

In 1701, during the Great Northern War, it was blown up by retreating troops to prevent it from falling into enemy hands, and it was never rebuilt. Today, the picturesque ruins are one of Latvia’s most famous historical sites. Although part of the surrounding landscape was altered when a hydroelectric reservoir was created in 1965, the castle remains a popular attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into Latvia’s medieval history and scenic river views.
