Komakiyama Castle Ruins
Komaki, Japan
Komakiyama Castle, located on Mount Komaki in Komaki City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, was built in 1563 by the famous daimyo Oda Nobunaga as a strategic base for his campaign to conquer Mino Province.
The castle was situated on an isolated hill about 86 meters high, providing broad views of the surrounding Nōbi Plain, making it an excellent defensive and command post. After securing Mino in 1567, Nobunaga moved his main fortress to Inabayama Castle, now Gifu Castle, and abandoned Komakiyama Castle.
However, during the conflict between Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu in the 1580s, known as the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute, Tokugawa Ieyasu occupied and expanded the castle as his headquarters. After the conflict ended, the castle was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin.
Today, the site is a historical park with preserved ruins such as stone walls, dry moats, and water wells, and a reconstructed tenshu-style building houses the Komaki City Historical Museum, showcasing various local artifacts. The mountain and castle site are also renowned for spectacular cherry blossoms in spring, attracting many visitors each year.
