Krepostʹ Manhup-Kale
Ukraine, Ukraine
Krepostʹ Manhup-Kale, also known as Mangup-Kale, in Crimea, Ukraine, is an ancient cave fortress atop a plateau dating back to the 3rd century AD with early settlements, fortified in the 6th century by Byzantine architects as the capital of Crimean Gothia, featuring robust walls, towers, and cave complexes for defense.
It served as the center of the independent Principality of Theodoro from the 13th to 15th centuries, enduring Khazar, Mongol, and other invasions until falling to Ottoman forces after a six-month siege in 1475, after which it declined under Turkish control.
Today, the expansive ruins with churches, dwellings carved into cliffs, and panoramic views over the Crimean landscape form a UNESCO tentative site and popular archaeological reserve, evoking its layered history from Gothic to medieval times.
