Krimulda Castle is a medieval castle ruin located near Sigulda in Latvia’s scenic Gauja River Valley.
Built in the 13th century by the Riga Cathedral Chapter, it served as a defensive stronghold of the Archbishopric of Riga and occupied a naturally protected position on a steep hillside overlooking the Gauja. The castle was involved in numerous regional conflicts during the Livonian period and later wars.
In 1601, during the Polish-Swedish War, it was captured and destroyed, after which it was never rebuilt as a fortress. Today, the remaining stone walls and ruins are a popular historical attraction within Gauja National Park. Visitors come to explore the castle’s medieval heritage and enjoy panoramic views of the Gauja Valley, making it one of the most picturesque castle sites in Latvia.
