Kubota Castle Ruins
Akita, Japan
Kubota Castle, located in Akita city, Japan, was built in 1604 by Satake Yoshinobu after the clan was transferred to Dewa Province by Tokugawa Ieyasu following the Battle of Sekigahara.
The castle served as the residence of the Satake clan, rulers of the Kubota Domain throughout the Edo period. Unlike many Japanese castles, Kubota Castle had very few stone walls and was mainly built using large earthen embankments and clay walls, with a focus on defensive moats and wooden structures. The castle reportedly never had a traditional main keep, possibly to avoid drawing the Tokugawa shogunate’s suspicion.
Most of Kubota Castle’s buildings were lost to fires and dismantling during the Meiji Restoration, except for a single surviving guardhouse. Today, the castle ruins are part of Senshu Park, featuring reconstructed gates, a turret museum, and remnants of moats and embankments, making it a peaceful historical site celebrated especially for cherry blossoms in spring.
