Kurume Castle Ruins
Fukuoka, Japan
Kurume Castle in Fukuoka, Japan, was built in 1587 by Kobayakawa Hidekane after Toyotomi Hideyoshi's conquest of Kyushu. It served as the residence for the Arima clan, who ruled the Kurume Domain for about 250 years during the Edo period.
The castle was built in the Hirayama style on a hill overlooking the Chikugo River, featuring defensive walls, inner moats, and multiple turrets, but it never had a main keep. Following the Meiji Restoration, the castle was dismantled in the 1870s, and today only ruins such as stone walls and moats remain.
The site now includes the Sasayama Shrine dedicated to the first Kurume lord, Arima Toyoji, and the Arima Memorial Museum, which exhibits artifacts related to the Arima family and the domain’s history. Kurume Castle’s ruins stand as an important cultural landmark that reflects the feudal history and architecture of the region.
