Kyiv Fortress, located on the hills of Kyiv's right bank along the Dnieper River, originated in the 17th century when Cossack forces under Hetman Ivan Samoilovych unified existing Old Kyiv and Pechersk fortifications around the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery, creating a massive defensive complex with earthen ramparts, moats, and stone walls to protect against Ottoman and Swedish threats.

Expanded in the early 18th century under Peter the Great into the Old Pechersk Fortress with a semicircular citadel featuring eight bulwarks, towers like Onufriievska and Ivan Kushchnik, and gates such as Moscow Gate, it later grew into the New Pechersk Fortress in the 19th century under Russian imperial rule, incorporating the Kyiv Arsenal, hospital bastions, Vasylkiv fortifications, and the distinctive Kosyy Kaponir for angled artillery fire.

Today, this Europe's largest earthen fortress preserves barracks, powder magazines, underground passages, and museums amid parks like Eternal Glory, symbolizing Kyiv's layered military history from Cossack era through imperial times.​
