Lahore Fort—locally known as Shahi Qila—is a majestic citadel that anchors the heart of Lahore’s Walled City, standing as a testament to centuries of imperial ambition, artistry, and resilience. Though the site has been inhabited for millennia, the fort’s current form began to take shape under Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1566, who transformed it from a mud structure into a formidable brick fortress.

Over time, successive rulers left their mark: Jahangir added the colossal Picture Wall, Shah Jahan built the shimmering Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors) and Naulakha Pavilion, and Aurangzeb constructed the iconic Alamgiri Gate, which faces the equally grand Badshahi Mosque. The fort’s architecture is a rich blend of Islamic, Persian, and Hindu motifs, reflecting the syncretic spirit of the Mughal era. The complex spans over 20 hectares and includes 21 notable monuments.

Highlights include:

After the Mughal decline, the fort passed through Sikh and British hands, each adding their own layers of history. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to museums, gardens, and cultural events that breathe life into its storied walls.
