Laszlovar Fortress
Lászlóvára, Romania, Romania
Laszlovar Fortress, known as Lászlóvára or Sfântul Ladislau Fortress, is located near the village of Coronini (formerly Lászlóvára) in Caraș-Severin County, Romania, on a hill overlooking the Danube River opposite the Serbian fortress of Galambóc.
Constructed in 1427 by King Sigismund of Hungary as a strategic counterpoint to Galambóc after its betrayal to the Ottomans, it served as a base for Hungarian assaults including the 1428 siege and later passed to the Teutonic Knights (1429-1435) before Ottoman capture around 1524 amid Banat conflicts.
Now reduced to scant ruins on the hill south of the village, it reflects short-lived medieval defenses in the Iron Gates region, built on possible Dacian foundations and destroyed through Habsburg-Ottoman wars.
