Leap Castle, near Roscrea in County Offaly, is one of Ireland’s most famous and historic castles.

Its origins are generally traced to the 13th century, when it was built by the O'Bannon clan and later became a stronghold of the powerful O'Carroll family. The castle occupies a strategic position overlooking an important route through the surrounding countryside. The castle witnessed centuries of conflict, including clan rivalries and attacks by rival forces.

One of the most famous stories associated with the castle involves the “Bloody Chapel,” where a member of the O'Carroll family is said to have killed his brother during a religious ceremony. Over time, Leap Castle passed to the Darby family and underwent several expansions before being damaged by fire during the Irish Civil War in 1922.

Since then, significant restoration work has been carried out. Today, the castle is renowned for its rich history, medieval architecture, and enduring folklore, making it one of Ireland’s best-known historic landmarks.
