Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo Region, Guyana

Lethem is a town in southern Guyana situated in the Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo region, serving as the regional capital. It lies on the Takutu River, which forms the border with Brazil, directly opposite the Brazilian town of Bonfim.

Named after Sir Gordon James Lethem, former governor of British Guiana, the town has a population of around 1,700 people (as of 2012). Lethem functions as a commercial hub for the surrounding area, where goods flow frequently between Guyana and Brazil. The town is known for its cowboys, or vaqueiros, and ranching lifestyle, with local agriculture including cashew, mango, and coconut trees, supported by a cashew processing plant nearby.

Infrastructure improvements include the Takutu River Bridge, built in 2009 with Brazilian funding, facilitating road transport between Brazil and Guyana’s capital, Georgetown. Lethem has an airport with scheduled flights to Georgetown and experiences a tropical climate with a rainy season from April to August. It hosts an annual Easter rodeo event with activities like bull riding and horse racing, reflecting its cultural heritage.
