Originally owned by the Lloyd family, the castle was significantly altered in the 1800s, reflecting the period's fashion for castellated residences. It was damaged during the Irish War of Independence when it was burnt down by the IRA in 1921 and remained in ruins for about 80 years.

In 1994, the castle was purchased by Joan and Michael Everard, who carefully restored it to its former grandeur, combining historical architectural details with modern luxury. Today, Lisheen Castle serves as a luxurious rental property offering an authentic historic experience with modern conveniences, family-friendly and formal dining facilities, and accommodations for up to 16 guests across nine traditionally styled bedrooms.
