Lisnacullia Castle
Coolcappa, Ireland, Ireland
Lisnacullia Castle is a medieval tower house located near Coolcappa in County Limerick, Ireland.
It was built between about 1460 and 1480 by the MacSheehy family, a prominent Gaelic warrior dynasty that settled in the area under the patronage of the Earl of Desmond. Constructed on a rocky site above a stream, the castle was designed as both a strong defensive fortress and a family residence.
It featured thick stone walls, multiple storeys, spiral staircases, and a surrounding fortified enclosure known as a bawn, reflecting the turbulent conditions of medieval Ireland. Over the centuries, the castle passed through several owners following political upheavals and land confiscations. Although partially ruined today, Lisnacullia Castle remains an impressive example of late medieval Irish architecture and an important reminder of County Limerick’s Gaelic heritage.
