Livonian Order Castle
Ventspils, Latvia, Latvia
The Livonian Order Castle in Ventspils is one of the oldest and best-preserved medieval castles in Latvia.
Built around 1290 by the Livonian Order, it originally served as a fortress and administrative center, helping control trade and defend the strategically important Baltic coast. Over more than 700 years, the castle has had many different roles, including a residence, military base, church, school, and prison.
Despite wars and periods of damage, it has retained much of its original medieval layout, making it a rare example of Livonian Order architecture. Today, the restored castle houses the Ventspils Museum, featuring exhibitions on the history of the castle, the city, and the surrounding region. It is also a popular cultural venue, hosting exhibitions, concerts, and educational programs while offering visitors a glimpse into Latvia’s medieval past.
