Lutoasa
Romania, Romania
Lutoasa is a small village in Mereni commune, Covasna County, Romania, within the Székely Land region of Transylvania, predominantly inhabited by ethnic Hungarians.
First recorded in 1332 as "Lueche" (from the Hungarian "Leöwete," linked to the Árpád dynasty name Levente), it belonged to the Udvarhelyszék district until 1876, passing through Hungarian, Romanian, and brief Hungarian control (1940-1944) amid 20th-century border shifts post-Trianon and WWII.
The village features a Gothic Reformed church ensemble from the 14th century with 16th-century defensive walls, a 1628 gate tower housing an ancient clock, and medieval frescoes including the Legend of Saint Ladislaus discovered in 2021 restorations, alongside ties to the 1506 Székely National Assembly and 1848 Revolution events commemorated at a memorial house.
Today it preserves Szekler architectural traditions, folk events, and culinary heritage in a rural setting near Târgu Secuiesc.
