Luz
Portugal, Portugal
Luz (officially Praia da Luz, meaning “Beach of the Light”) is a small civil parish and former fishing village located about 6 kilometers west of Lagos in Portugal’s Algarve region.
Known for its peaceful, laid-back atmosphere compared to busier Algarve resorts, it has grown into a popular tourist destination with holiday villas, restaurants serving traditional Portuguese and international cuisine, and excellent beach facilities. Its main attraction is the Blue Flag Praia da Luz, a long sandy beach framed by dramatic golden cliffs including the volcanic Rocha Negra (“black rock”), offering activities like diving, kayaking, dolphin watching, and paddleboarding.
The village features Algarvian neo-Baroque architecture rebuilt after the destructive 1755 Lisbon earthquake, with some older Manueline motifs and 18th-century buildings still visible. Historical elements include Roman ruins excavated on the beach, a 16th-century coastal fort (now a restaurant with ocean views) built to defend against pirates, and visible Moorish architectural influences from centuries of occupation.
With a population of around 3,545, Luz was elevated to village status in 2001 and remains especially popular with visitors from the UK and Ireland seeking sunny weather, seafood, and a relaxing coastal getaway.
