Mafra is a town and municipality in the Lisbon region of Portugal, about 30 kilometers northwest of the capital, set in a mostly rural and green landscape with a mix of farmland, cork oak woods, and a suburban commuter feel.

It is best known for the imposing Mafra National Palace, a vast 18th‑century Baroque complex that includes a royal palace, a basilica, and a Franciscan convent, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major cultural attraction. The palace sits at the edge of the Tapada Nacional de Mafra, a large fenced game and nature reserve where deer and wild boar roam, offering walking and wildlife‑viewing opportunities.

The municipality also stretches down to the coast, encompassing the popular surf town of Ericeira, so Mafra serves as a bridge between inland countryside life and Atlantic‑coast tourism, with a moderate ocean‑influenced climate and a mix of agriculture, light industry, and growing residential and tourist activity.
