Mănăstirea Morisena, located in Cenad commune, Timiș County, Romania, traces its origins to the 8th century in the ancient settlement of Morisena on the Mureș River, becoming Romania's earliest documented monastic site around 1002 under local ruler Ahtum, who brought Orthodox monks after his baptism.
Dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, it remained loyal to the Byzantine rite during the 1054 Great Schism, prompting Hungarian King Stephen I to relocate its monks and transform it into a Catholic abbey and the first episcopate in Banat by 1030 under Bishop Gerard of Cenad.
Revived in 2003 by Banat Metropolis on its historic footprint, the modern monastery features a church consecrated in 2005, summer chapel, and buildings symbolizing the region's ancient Christian roots amid a millennium of turbulent religious shifts.
