Maracas Beach
Maracas Bay Village, Trinidad and Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago
Maracas Beach, located in Maracas Bay Village on Trinidad’s north coast, is Trinidad and Tobago’s most popular and beloved beach, famous for its off-white quartz sand, palm trees, blue-green waters, and exciting surf.
The crescent-shaped beach stretches about 1.8 kilometers (nearly 1.25 miles) and is bounded by prominent headlands at both ends, with the perennial Maracas River entering at the western end. Waves average 50 cm in the dry season and 40 cm in the wet season, but can reach 1.5 meters between November and April when seas are rough, making it ideal for body surfing and board surfing.
The beach is internationally known as the home of “bake and shark,” a wildly popular local street food made with fried shark meat in baked bread and served with secret sauces like tamarind, pepper, and garlic. On any Sunday, Maracas Bay is never empty as beach lovers, sunbathers, and nature lovers flock to this idyllic lunch spot with stunning views.
Facilities include a car park, beach huts, picnic tables, change rooms with showers and toilets for a fee, and lifeguards who patrol from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with flag warnings posted for safety. The beach is about 30–40 minutes from Port of Spain via the scenic North Coast Road through the Northern Range, and while swimming, body surfing, sun bathing, and camping are popular, visitors should supervise young children carefully due to strong longshore and rip currents.
