"Maria Theresia" Bastion
Timișoara, Romania, Romania
"Maria Theresia" Bastion in Timișoara, Romania, is the largest surviving section of the city's 18th-century Habsburg fortress, constructed between 1730 and 1735 as a storage ravelin for military supplies like flour and salt, originally named Proviant Depot before being renamed in honor of Empress Maria Theresa around 1744.
Fully enclosed unlike the other eight bastions, it formed part of the first fortification ring in the Vauban-inspired system rebuilt after the 1716 Habsburg conquest of Timișoara from the Ottomans, spanning 1.7 hectares with vaulted rooms later used for diverse purposes including a bishop's residence, archives, workshops, and schools.
Spared from early 20th-century demolitions due to its practical utility, it now hosts Banat Museum exhibitions on local history and ethnography, commercial spaces, restaurants, and cultural events after 20th-century restorations.
