Marmaris Castle and Archeology Museum
Marmaris, Türkiye, Turkey
Marmaris Castle, overlooking Marmaris Bay in Muğla Province, Turkey, traces its origins to ancient walls from around 3000 BC mentioned by Herodotus, with the current structure largely rebuilt by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in 1522 as a military base for his Rhodes campaign.
The fortress features thick stone walls up to 10 meters high, five bastions, a dungeon, and Ottoman architectural elements like a masjid and cistern, damaged in World War I by French shelling. Restored since 1979 and opened as an archaeology museum in 1991, it displays regional artifacts from Byzantine, Ottoman, and later eras while offering panoramic harbor views.
