Verified Mastuj Fort

Mastuj, Pakistan, Pakistan

Mastuj Fort is a historic fortification in Mastuj town of the Chitral District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, situated on a plateau at the confluence of the Yarkhun River and the Mastuj River near the Shandur Pass.

It is traditionally attributed to the Katoor Dynasty, who built the original fort around 1780, and it was later rebuilt in 1830 under the Waish (Mastuj) rulers and again in the 1920s, with thick stone walls up to six to seven feet wide and about 18 feet high, incorporating wooden beams for earthquake resistance and defensive strength.

The fort served as an administrative and military center, with areas used by the local ruling family, soldiers, and British-era government offices, and it played a strategic role in controlling the upper Chitral valleys and the routes toward Shandur and Gilgit. In recent decades, the fort has fallen into disrepair and is described as being in a “khosta” (dilapidated) condition, with its historic structures largely unexplored and in need of conservation, though it remains a notable landmark in the scenic landscape of upper Chitral near Mastuj.
