Matsumori Castle
Izumi, Miyagi, Japan
Matsumori Castle, located in modern-day Izumi-ku, Miyagi Prefecture, was historically the seat of the Kokubu clan before the Date clan's rise to power in the region. Known also as Matsumoridate or Flying Crane Castle due to its resemblance to a crane's spreading wings, it once played a significant role in local governance. After the Date clan consolidated control, the castle was mostly dismantled but continued to be used as a traditional site for their New Year’s falconry outings. Today, only ruins remain, symbolizing the area's historical ties to the Kokubu and Date clans.
