Medieval Fortress of Târgu Mureș
Târgu Mureș, Romania, Romania
The Medieval Fortress of Târgu Mureș, located at the heart of Târgu Mureș in Romania, originated in 1492 when Prince Ștefan Báthory ordered a stone castle built around an existing Franciscan monastery and church to control potential revolts, featuring early square medieval towers. Destroyed in 1601 during conflicts involving Mihai Viteazul and rebuilt from 1602-1652 into its current pentagonal form with seven robust brick bastions—five constructed by local guilds like tanners and coopers—it served as a defensive hub under Prince Gabriel Bethlen starting in 1613. Used militarily until 1962, it now functions as a cultural green space hosting museums, events, and gardens within its 4.3-hectare enclosure.
