Melgården
Deset, Norway, Norway
Melgården in Deset, Norway, is a prominent storgård in Østerdalen first documented in 1465 through a royal diploma, representing the region's forest baron heritage tied to timber, shipping, and trade booms.
The main building, a paneled wooden structure blending Empire and Swiss chalet styles, was constructed in 1875-1877 by estate owner and composer Tollef Nielsen Mykleby to designs by architect Nestor Georgius Thomassen, featuring opulent interiors like a 150 m² dance hall with original wallpaper, chandeliers, and stucco that hosted concerts, balls, and cultural events attended by musicians, artists, and philanthropists.
Today privately owned by the Mykleby family, it functions as a cultural center in the woods with well-preserved house, garden, and outbuildings little altered since the 19th century, hosting annual concerts during Festspillene i Elverum while undergoing meticulous restoration supported by heritage funds.
