Meydancık Castle
Turkey, Turkey
Meydancık Castle is a ruined ancient fortress in Gülnar district of Mersin Province, southern Turkey, originally known as Kirshu, the capital of the Luwian state of Pirandu around the 7th century BC.
Sacked by Babylonian Emperor Neriglissar in the 6th century BC, it later fell under Achaemenid Persian, Ptolemaic Egyptian, and Seleucid rule, featuring a rectangular 750x150 meter enclosure with military barracks, a central palace where over 5,000 Hellenistic coins were found, and a mysterious southern wellhole possibly a cistern or altar.
Perched on a 700-meter hill accessible from Gülnar or Aydıncık, the site reveals layers from Bronze Age to Ottoman times called Beydili Kale, now an open archaeological area.
