Mikó Citadel
Miercurea Ciuc, Romania, Romania
Mikó Citadel in Miercurea Ciuc, Romania, is a late Renaissance fortress built starting in 1623 by Ferenc Mikó, a prominent political figure, diplomat, and advisor to Prince Gabriel Bethlen, who gifted him the land for this quadrilateral stronghold measuring 75 by 70 meters with Italian-style bastions. Completed likely in the 1630s and first documented in 1631, it endured a 1661 Turkish-Tatar invasion before Austrian reconstruction from 1714-1716 under General Steinville, adding a defense system, gunpowder depot, and chapel in the southwest bastion with late Baroque stucco and Gothic windows. Today, this oldest monument of the city houses the Csiki Székely Museum, showcasing its historical role on Transylvania's eastern Habsburg border.
