Miranda do Douro's Castle
Miranda do Douro, Portugal, Portugal
Miranda do Douro's Castle is a Gothic-style medieval fortress in the town of Miranda do Douro, Bragança district, northern Portugal, near the Douro River and Spanish border. Built around 1286 under King Dinis after earlier 13th-century fortifications, it features an irregular rectangular plan with granite-schist walls, a rectangular keep tower, three lower towers (two quadrangular, one hexagonal), a central cistern, and protected gates like the pointed-arch Porta da Senhora do Amparo. Damaged by an explosion in the Seven Years' War and later modernized for artillery, it now stands as a partial ruin enclosing a courtyard amid town walls, classified as a National Monument.
