Mito Castle Ruins
Mito, Japan
Mito Castle Ruins, located in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, mark the site of a historically important 12th-century fortress that was home to the powerful Mito branch of the Tokugawa family during the Edo period.
Originally built in 1214 by Baba Sukemoto, the castle became renowned as Japan's largest earthen flatland castle and played a key role in regional politics, especially after becoming the seat of the Mito Tokugawa family in the early 1600s.
While most of the original structures were lost due to fire, demolition, and war damages, today visitors can explore the remaining earthen walls, moat, reconstructed gates, and the clan school Kodokan, all set amid serene gardens and cherry trees that make the site a peaceful and scenic attraction for those interested in Japanese history and culture.
