Mogadouro's Castle
Mogadouro, Portugal, Portugal
Mogadouro's Castle is a Romanesque medieval fortress in the town of Mogadouro, Bragança district, northern Portugal's Trás-os-Montes region near the Spanish border. Constructed between 1160-1165 amid the Reconquista, it was donated to the Knights Templar in 1186 by Fernão Mendes of Bragança, later becoming an Order of Christ commandery after 1319, with expansions including a rectangular keep tower on a rocky outcrop, oval walls, and quadrangular towers. King Afonso III granted a charter in 1272, and the Távoras family enhanced it from 1433, adding a clock tower by the 17th century during the Restoration War, though it fell into ruin post-1759; today, partial walls and the tower remain as a National Monument since 1946.
