Monastery of Alcobaça
Alcobaça, Leiria District, Portugal
The Monastery of Alcobaça, in Alcobaça, Leiria District, is one of Portugal’s most important medieval monasteries and a landmark of early Gothic architecture.
Founded in 1178 by King Afonso I for the Cistercian order, its vast church—consecrated in 1252—was the largest in Portugal and the first fully Gothic church in the country, marked by a very tall, slender nave, pointed arches, and a simple, austerely decorated interior typical of Cistercian ideals.
The complex includes the great Cloister of Silence, one of the largest Cistercian cloisters in Europe, later enhanced with a Manueline upper floor, and houses the famous 14th‑century tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro, whose elaborate Gothic sculptures and facing placement evoke their tragic love story; together these qualities led to its inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
