Monsaraz Castle in Monsaraz, Portugal, atop a prominent hill overlooking the Guadiana valley and Spanish border, evolved from prehistoric hillfort origins through Roman, Visigothic, and Moorish fortifications before its 13th-century Christian reconstruction under King Afonso III, who granted the first charter and built the core alcázar with five square towers.

Expanded by King Dinis around 1310 with a keep tower and village walls after passing to the Order of Christ, it featured Gothic arched gates like the ogival Porta da Vila with semi-cylindrical turrets and a 1692 clock bell, blending military strength with medieval aesthetics amid Reconquista defenses.

Modernized during the 1640 Restoration War by engineers Nicolau de Langres and Jean Gillot with Vauban-style star bastions including Forte de São Bento, it integrated into the Elvas-Juromenha line, later hosting an 18th-19th century bullring in its courtyard before classification as a National Monument.
