The Montale Tower is a small, fortified tower on Monte Titano in the city of San Marino, perched on the southernmost and smallest of the three main peaks that overlook the capital. Built in the 13th or 14th century, it is the youngest and least‑visited of San Marino’s three symbolic towers and served both as a watchtower and a prison, with its only entrance set several meters above ground in a way typical for medieval prison structures. The tower is part of a defensive wall system that links all three towers and played a key role in guarding the republic against regional powers such as the Malatesta family. Today the Montale Tower is permanently closed to interior visits, but visitors can walk up to it and view its compact, pentagonal form, as well as the dramatic panoramic views of the surrounding valley and the Emilia‑Romagna skyline, and it also appears on San Marino’s national flag, coat of arms, and one‑cent euro coin.
