Montalegre Castle
Portugal, Portugal
Montalegre Castle is a well-preserved medieval fortress in the town of Montalegre, Vila Real district, northern Portugal's Barroso region near the Spanish border. Granted a charter by King Afonso III in 1273 and completed in 1331 under Afonso IV—as inscribed on its south tower—it features a polygonal granite plan with thick walls linking five robust towers, including a prominent clock tower, cistern, and gates, designed to guard the Tâmega and Cávado valleys. It backed Beatriz in the 1383-1385 crisis before John I's forces secured it post-Aljubarrota, saw repairs in 1580 and artillery upgrades during the 1640 Restoration War, and endured the 1755 earthquake, now serving as a museum and National Monument.
