Mountgarrett Castle

New Ross, Ireland, Ireland

---

Mountgarrett Castle is a medieval tower house located on a hill overlooking New Ross in County Wexford, Ireland.

It was originally built in 1408 by Patrick Barrett, the Bishop of Ferns, and later rebuilt and expanded in the 16th century by Sir Richard Butler, who became the first Lord Mountgarrett. The castle was one of the largest tower houses in County Wexford, rising five storeys high and featuring strong defensive elements such as thick walls, a fortified entrance, guardrooms, and a surrounding defensive enclosure known as a bawn.

Its elevated position provided strategic views over the River Barrow and the surrounding area. Although the castle survived for centuries, parts of the structure collapsed in the early 21st century after years of deterioration. Today, the ruins remain an important historic landmark and ongoing conservation efforts aim to preserve this significant example of medieval architecture and local heritage.
