Moygara Castle is a medieval fortress located near Gorteen and Lough Gara in County Sligo, Ireland.

Built by the O'Gara clan, it served as one of their principal strongholds and played an important role in protecting their territory for centuries. The site was first recorded in the late 13th century and was later expanded with defensive towers and strong surrounding walls. The castle endured several attacks during its history, including assaults by the O'Donnells in 1538 and Scottish mercenaries in 1581, which caused significant damage.

Despite these conflicts, it remained an important center of Gaelic power and is associated with Fearghal Ó Gadhra, a notable patron of the famous Annals of the Four Masters. Today, Moygara Castle survives as an impressive ruin, with parts of its towers, gatehouse, and enclosing walls still standing. It is regarded as one of County Sligo’s most significant Gaelic castle sites and offers a fascinating glimpse into Ireland’s medieval history and clan heritage.
