Museum of the Khalifa's House
Omdurman, Khartoum State, Sudan
The Museum of the Khalifa’s House in Omdurman, Sudan, was once the residence of Khalifa Abdallahi ibn Muhammad, the successor to the Mahdi and leader of the Mahdist State in the late 19th century. This historic mud-brick building served as the center of government and administration during the Mahdiyya period.
Converted into a museum in 1928, it is located directly opposite the Tomb of the Mahdi and is notable for its traditional architecture with linked courtyards and both one- and two-story sections.
Inside the museum are artifacts from the Mahdist era, including weapons, military uniforms, coins, and banknotes issued during the Siege of Khartoum, as well as personal belongings of the Khalifa.
The museum also displays items related to significant battles, such as rifles, swords, banners, and a Maxim gun from the Battle of Omdurman. Among its most remarkable pieces are the first car to be used in Sudan, a rare Arrol-Johnston motor tractor as well as documents, photographs, and the original cupola from the Mahdi’s tomb. The museum offers visitors a unique look into Sudan’s 19th-century history, focusing on the Mahdist State, its leaders, and the struggle for Sudanese independence during that time.
