National Forestry University Botanical Garden
Lviv, Lviv Oblast, Ukraine, Ukraine
The National Forestry University Botanical Garden in Lviv is part of the Ukrainian National Forestry University and functions mainly as an arboretum devoted to trees and shrubs.
It was created to preserve and study the diversity of woody plants, support student training, and provide a living laboratory for research in dendrology and forestry, including how different species adapt to local climatic and urban conditions.
The arboretum is considered one of the oldest dendrological collections in Lviv and preserves elements of 19th‑century garden and park design, with age-old trees—some over 100 years old—representing both native and introduced species such as black walnut, katsura-tree and American witch-hazel, several of which are among the oldest specimens of their kind in western Ukraine.
Structurally, the botanical garden includes this arboretum in Lviv and a separate dendrological park (arboretum) near Stradch village about 17 km away, both used for teaching, long-term observations and ecological studies of forest species in semi-natural settings. Overall, the garden is a specialized educational and research resource rather than a heavily touristic display garden, though its mature trees and historic layout also make it a quiet green space of local heritage value.
