Nejō Castle Ruins, Honmaru-ato
Hachinohe, Japan
Nejō Castle Ruins, located in Hachinohe, Japan, is the site of a flat-style castle built in 1334 by military commander Nanbu Moroyuki during the early Nanboku-chō period. The castle served as the administrative and residential center for the Nejo branch of the Nanbu clan, playing an important regional role for about 300 years.
It was situated on a river terrace by the Mabechi River, using natural defenses supplemented with wooden palisades, earthen ramparts, and dry moats. The castle featured several enclosures with residences, barracks, workshops, storerooms, and a Buddhist temple serving the clan. In 1592, the fortifications were destroyed by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and the clan’s headquarters moved elsewhere, leading to the castle’s abandonment by 1627.
The site has been protected as a National Historic Site since 1941 and reconstructed to showcase its medieval layout, with continuing archaeological studies revealing buildings and artifacts from its era. Nejō Castle is regarded as a significant historical and cultural landmark representing the legacy of the Nanbu clan in northern Japan.
