Nizhyn, Ukraine, is an ancient city in Chernihiv Oblast first mentioned in 1147 chronicles as a Kyivan Rus' settlement, later thriving as a Cossack regiment center during the 17th-18th centuries Hetmanate era with self-governance under Magdeburg rights granted in 1625.

It hosted the pivotal 1663 Black Council electing Hetman Ivan Bryukhovetskyi, featured massive Pokrova fairs boosting Left Bank trade, and became home to a privileged Greek community under Bohdan Khmelnytsky and Ivan Mazepa, alongside notable Jewish and Cossack populations amid pogroms in 1881, 1905, and wartime devastations.

In the 19th century, as Chernihiv Governorate's largest uyezd seat, it established the prestigious Bezborodko Lyceum in 1805, now Nizhyn Gogol State University whose alumni include Nikolai Gogol, while gaining fame for its cucumbers; today, it preserves over 300 historic buildings in Ukrainian Baroque style, like St. Nicholas Cathedral, as a cultural hub resilient through Soviet, Nazi, and recent Russian aggressions.
