Nui is a small coral atoll and one of the nine districts of Tuvalu, located in the central Pacific Ocean. It consists of more than 20 islets surrounding a lagoon, with most residents living on the main islet of Fenua Tapu. The atoll has a population of a little over 500 people and is known for its peaceful island lifestyle, beautiful beaches, and clear lagoon waters. Nui is culturally distinctive within Tuvalu because many residents have ancestral ties to Kiribati, and both Gilbertese and Tuvaluan are commonly spoken. Traditional fishing, coconut cultivation, and community activities remain important parts of daily life. The atoll was first recorded by Europeans in 1568 during a Spanish expedition, but its history stretches back much further through Polynesian and Micronesian settlement. Today, Nui is valued for its strong cultural traditions, unspoiled natural environment, and relaxed atmosphere far from major tourist destinations.
