Oita Funai Castle Ruins are the remains of a historic castle in the center of Oita City, originally built in the late 16th century by the powerful warlord Ōtomo Sōrin and later expanded by other feudal rulers.

The castle served as an important political and military center in Kyushu and was surrounded by moats, stone walls, and numerous towers. Much of the original castle was destroyed by fire and later dismantled during the Meiji period, but parts of the stone walls, moats, and several turrets have survived or been reconstructed.

The site also reflects Oita’s connection to early Christianity in Japan through the influence of Ōtomo Sōrin, one of the country’s most notable Christian daimyō. Today, the castle grounds form a peaceful public park where visitors can explore the historic remains, admire the moat and restored structures, and enjoy seasonal scenery such as cherry blossoms.
