Oka Castle Ruins
Taketa, Japan
Oka Castle Ruins in Taketa, Japan, date back to 1185 and were built on a steep hilltop surrounded by rivers and mountains. Originally constructed to shelter the legendary Minamoto no Yoshitsune, the castle was expanded over centuries, especially under the Nakagawa clan in the late 16th century, with large stone walls, multiple enclosures, and watchtowers.
Despite its size and formidable defenses, the castle saw little military action during the peaceful Edo period. It was decommissioned and dismantled in 1871 by the Meiji government, leaving behind extensive stone ruins that remain well-preserved today and are famous for their scenic beauty, especially during cherry blossom season.
The castle is celebrated both for its historical importance and as the inspiration for the famous Japanese song "Kojo no Tsuki" (Moon over the Castle Ruins) composed in its honor.
