Okazaki Castle
Okazaki, Japan
Okazaki Castle in Okazaki, Japan, was originally built in 1455 by Saigo Tsugiyori and later expanded by Matsudaira Kiyoyasu. It is renowned as the birthplace of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate that unified Japan. The castle played a key role during the Edo period as a major stronghold and was strategically positioned at the junction of the Sugo and Iga rivers.
It was one of the first castles built on a plain rather than a mountaintop, designed to control the fertile rice fields and surrounding areas. The original castle was demolished in 1873 during the Meiji Restoration, but it was reconstructed in 1959 with a modern concrete main keep that faithfully replicates the historical structure.
Today, the castle grounds serve as a park featuring museums, traditional theaters, and monuments, and are well known for cherry blossom viewing. The stone walls and moats from the original castle still survive, providing visitors with a glimpse of its historic significance and architectural grandeur.
