Olyka Castle
Olyka, Ukraine, Ukraine
Olyka Castle in Olyka, Ukraine, was constructed between 1554 and 1564 by Prince Mikołaj Radziwiłł "the Black" as one of the first rectangular bastion-type fortresses in the region, spanning about 100 by 120 meters with a large courtyard, thick walls, corner bastions, a moat, and two entrance gates flanked by a baroque clock tower.
Serving as the Radziwiłł family's principal seat in Volhynia for nearly 400 years, it withstood multiple sieges between 1591 and 1648, evolved into a baroque palace residence in the 18th century under Prince Michał Radziwiłł, and endured damages from wars, fires, and Soviet repurposing as a psychiatric hospital until 2021.
Now transferred to the Volyn Museum and open to visitors, this "Palazzo in Fortezza" preserves its fortified palace complex amid nearby baroque landmarks like the Holy Trinity Collegiate, symbolizing aristocratic heritage in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
