Ormond Castle
Carrick-on-Suir, Ireland, Ireland
Ormond Castle is a historic castle and manor house located in Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary, on the banks of the River Suir.
Originally part of a medieval castle owned by the powerful Butler family, it became famous when Thomas Butler, the 10th Earl of Ormond, added a grand Elizabethan manor house in 1565. It is widely regarded as the finest example of an Elizabethan manor house in Ireland.
The castle is renowned for its magnificent Great Hall and some of the best surviving 16th-century stucco plasterwork in Ireland, including decorative features linked to Queen Elizabeth I and the Tudor monarchy. Its architecture reflects English Renaissance influences that were uncommon in Ireland at the time.
After serving as a residence for generations of the Butler family, the castle gradually fell into decline but was later restored by the Irish state. Today, it is a protected national monument and popular heritage attraction, offering visitors a rare glimpse into both medieval and Tudor-era life in Ireland.
