Osorno Volcano, rising to 2,652 meters in Chile’s Los Lagos Region, is a striking stratovolcano that dominates the landscape with its perfectly symmetrical cone and snowcapped peak. Often compared to Japan’s Mount Fuji for its iconic silhouette, Osorno stands between Llanquihue and Todos los Santos Lakes, offering breathtaking views that have made it a symbol of southern Chile and a gateway to Patagonia.

Despite its serene appearance, Osorno is one of the most active volcanoes in the southern Andes, with eleven recorded eruptions between 1575 and 1869. Its basalt and andesite lava flows once reached the surrounding lakes, and Charles Darwin himself witnessed an eruption in 1835 during his voyage on the HMS Beagle.

Today, the volcano is considered dormant, but its geological legacy continues to shape the region’s terrain and ecology. Osorno is a magnet for adventure seekers and nature lovers. The slopes host a ski center with year-round snow sports, while summer invites hikers to explore trails that wind through Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park.

From the Petrohué Waterfalls to the emerald waters of Lake Todos los Santos, the surrounding area is a mosaic of natural wonders. Visitors can ascend the volcano for panoramic views of the Andes, or take a boat to the eco-village of Peulla for canopy tours, horseback riding, and hikes to hidden waterfalls.
